Working Remote Control

I have a really sweet Logitech Harmony 880 remote control that I use to control all of my home theater components (HDTV, HD Cable Box, SD Cable Box, Series 2 Tivo, XBox, Denon Receiver, Sony DVD Player). The Harmony replaces all of my individual remotes and provides "activity" based control over my equipment. This makes it dead easy to do things like watch Tivo, listen to Internet radio, watch DVD's, etc, without having to know anything about how each piece of equipment works, what order it may need to be turned on in, or specific remote control functions.

Last week, unfortunately, my Harmony stopped working. I was fairly sure that the IR transmitter was shot, but I wasn't 100% sure. It wasn't until I spoke to Logitech tech support that I was reminded of a little trick for diagnosing a dead IR remote. You see, if you point a digital camera at an IR remote control, you can see the IR transmitter(s) light up via the LCD screen on the digital camera. The picture above illustrates what a typical functioning remote control's IR transmitter looks like. In the case of my Harmony, the IR transmitter was completely dead. Logitech's sending me a new remote which should be here in a few days.

One other really cool feature with the Harmony 880 is that you program it over the Internet. So, when my new remote arrives, all I need to do to set it up is to log into the Logitech web site, connect my remote via USB, and click the Update Remote button. 1 minute later, my new remote will have all of the programming of my old remote. Now that's slick!

Todd Sanders's Gravatar I love my 880 but it never seems to send on the charger base very well, so it is always dead.. But it totally rocks even controls my Dell HD Projector without a problem. Great Tip.. Now if you just get the right UV Filter, Night Vision, and a few more IR led's you can see through clothes... ;-)

Rob Brooks-Bilson's Gravatar Todd,

I've had that problem a few times too. I found that taking an eraser and cleaning the contacts on the remote and the stand helped a lot.

I'll be working on the uv filter/night vision hack next ;-)

Rob Wilkerson's Gravatar I've been looking at this remote for about six months or so and wondering whether it was worth it. Sounds like it has your endorsement. It looks outstanding, but I've been burned by "universal" remotes before. And this one operates TiVo. That's key for me.

Might have to do a little shopping later...

Rob Brooks-Bilson's Gravatar Rob,

Both I and my wife (very important consideration) have been very happy with it (minus the fact that it died, but is being replaced under warranty). We're huge Tivo users, so controling Tivo was a key decision point for us as well.

I ended up getting mine on eBay (new). There are deals to be had, you just need to look/wait for them. Dell sells a branded version of the Harmony 880, which goes on sale quite often at a really good price.

Mark Davis's Gravatar I love my Harmony remote. My Denon 3802 remote died a year or so ago, so I decided on the Harmonry to replace everything. My wife loves that I don't have 7 remotes around. Even my 2 year old knows how to turn on the TV now.

Rob Wilkerson's Gravatar Well, it didn't take much, but I'm sold. I'll be shopping tonight. If Mark's 2 year old can handle it, then I'd like to think I can too. Or maybe I'm being too optimistic...

Rob Brooks-Bilson's Gravatar I'll be posting up some additional Harmony tips soon. Configuring it can be a bit tedious the first time around because the web interface could be better, but there are definite tips and shortcuts to be had.

The "activity based" control is so much nicer than having to deal with individual device remotes.

Thankful's Gravatar Whoa! That's so cool!!!! Thanks much for passing along that simple test. You've saved me loads of time searching the net for an infrared tester to buy, not knowing I already had one built into my cell phone. Great tip!!!
