Due to the amount of comment spam getting by the captcha these days, I've decided to remove the captcha and instead turn on moderated comments. I hate to have to do this, but the amount of comment spam was starting to get ridiculous, and I really hate to see people who have left legitimate comments on the blog get hammered by spammers.

So, please stick with me while I transition to moderated comments. I'll try to get legitimate comments approved as quickly as possible. If your comment doesn't show up right away, don't worry, I haven't forgotten about you, and I certainly won't censor non-spam comments.

barry.b's Gravatar damn! captcha is thwarted. that's a crying shame - a sad day for captcha as a tool.

(well, OK so it's not just you getting hit Rob, but the ripples are now waves)

if only the world was a better place to not need any of this.

Rob Brooks-Bilson's Gravatar I hear ya. I don't like the current way you have to approve moderated comments in blogCFC. I may try to do something about that this week.

I'm also going to look into Askimet, as I've heard several people say they've had good success with that.

Barney's Gravatar Yay!! Another CAPTCHA-free blog!!

Have you looked at Akismet? It does a fantastic job, and I believe there is a CF interface for it.

Rob Brooks-Bilson's Gravatar Hi Barney,

I was thinking Askimet might be the next step. I always hated captcha, and I'm not too fond of having to log into my admin just to approve comments (I need to whip up something to send me emails so I can approve from my Blackberry at the least).

Barney's Gravatar I use Akismet and moderating, but have moderation set up to be skipped for people with an already-approved comment. Since I get a lot of repeat commenters on my site, the majority of comments are published immediately. Don't know if BlogCFC does that, but I'll find out in just a sec. ;)

With Akismet, I still get a handful of spam comments into the moderation queue, but it's a very small number. Maybe 10 per month, compared with the thousands it blocks. Never had spam get through both and show up on the site.

Jake Munson's Gravatar +1 for Akismet. You may also want to combine Akismet with Project Honeypot (google it). It's very effective. Between the two, I'd think you'd only have a rare spam message slip through.
