MAX 2005 Sneaks - RDS Support for CFEclipse

During yesterday's sneaks session, Damon Cooper showed off RDS support from within Eclipse. This feature has often been cited as one of the "must have" features missing from CFEclipse. In addition to the basic file capabilities or RDS, Damon also showed database browsing and query building from within Eclipse. Very nice and very sought after.

Previously at CFUnited, Damon indicated that Macromedia would be working with the CFEclipse team to contribute to the project. When we'll see this feature incorporated into CFEclipse, or perhaps released as a separate plugin is still not known.

rd's Gravatar So, did they give any indication as to whether homesite would be getting the official MM Eclipse treatment ala Flex Builder? Or were they keeping their plans secret. Any hints?

Rob Brooks-Bilson's Gravatar No hints, but my guess is that Homesite is a dead product. There hasn't been a major update in years. Most of the functionality is now in Eclipse, or headed there soon. I still personally use HomeSite as a basic text editor, but for coding, looks like CFEclipse is the future!

john's Gravatar I guess I need to understand what the "the basic file capabilities or RDS" means before I get too excited. I rarely use RDS to open/edit a file on a remote server, but I use it consistently to deploy files to remote servers. So RDS can mean a couple of things to different users. Do you know if CFE's implementation of RDS covers the same remote deployment capabilities that HomeSite+ has?

I'm in the same boat with you with regards to using Homesite's Project Deploy feature to deploy files to some of my servers via RDS.

That capability wasn't demonstrated at the sneak, but that doesn't mean it won't be included. I've mentioned it to Macromedia in the past, but I don't know whether or not it's on the feature list. I'll make a point of mentioning it to them again now that it looks like they are going to help the CFEclipse team with RDS.
