I'm a huge fan of Seghesio wines. I'm especially fond of their 2002 Old Vine Zinfandel. It's probably my favorite Zin, although at around $30 a bottle, it's a bit more than I like to spend for an everyday wine.
When Pere and I were in Sonoma a few months ago, we had the opportunity to taste at Seghesio. One of the wines we didn't buy at the time, but I later picked up locally was their 2004 Sonoma County Zinfandel. You can find it from $15-$22 a bottle, depending on where you go. Even Costco seems to be selling it these days (they're the ones carrying it for $15 a bottle).
Today I finally got around to trying the wine. It was a deep ruby color, and my first taste was peppery and seemed high on tannin. After the wine sat for a few minutes and I tasted again, the sharp tannin had balanced with the taste of ripe cherries. All in all, it was very smooth and quite delicious. It doesn't replace the old vine Zin as my favorite, but at it's more moderate price, it's definitely going to find a place on my regular wine rotation.
