I'm a little late with this post, but it looks like Udupi Cafe has once again ran afoul of the Maricopa County Health Inspectors. This is the second time in about a year (last time they had 13 violations) that Udupi has had problems. This time, they racked up 8 new health violations, resulting in the county filing papers to revoke their license to operate.
It's a real shame because the food at Udupi was really good. I just don't understand why they find it so hard to keep the place clean and practice good restaurant sanitation. There are plenty of other small restaurant operators that don't seem to have the problems Udupi does.

It's a shame. The food was, in my opinion, the best Indian food in the Phoenix Metro Area, but it appears that the managment just never understood or acknowledged the
importance of complying with health codes. I've heard some people say that most small "ethnic" restaurants have trouble in this regard, but that's not always true.
Khai Hoan, the hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese restaurant in Tempe, for examples, gets consistent gold awards. It is possible to be small, independent, and compliant.
I agree 100%. I've been to plenty of ethnic/mom & pop/hole-in-the-wall restaurants around the valley, and the majority of them are more than capable of running a clean kitchen. I really did like Udupi, despite the fact that I knew what was most likely happening back in the kitchen. The loss of such a restaurant, especially for Arizona's vegetarian community is truly a shame.
I'd never tried Udupi, but did you see that there's a new Indian restaurant on the SE corner of Warner and Dobson, next to C-Fu Gourmet? It's in the space that was a Polish restaurant and I think a Peruvian place before that. We ate there tonight. The food is quite tasty, although not so home-style, a little ritzier with more attention to presentation. We had chicken tikka masala, lamb paneer and shrimp curry, and we all ate nearly every bite. They've done a good job decorating the place with pretty curtains and colors. Would be interested to hear what you have to say.
I've driven by Curry House several times and have been waiting for them to open. It's good to hear that they are up and running - I'll have to stop by in a few weeks to see how they are doing. I have been waiting for an Indian restaurant with above average food to open. The state of Indian food in the Phoenix area is pretty sad.
I was a kid in a candy store at Udupi. I was so upset over the health violation. But I just checked the maricopa.gov environemental web site and as of Sept. 28
it looked like they cleaned up their act. Has something more recent happend?
I have heard several complaints about his attitude. And also heard that he does not pay his employees well. To be sure, I once asked the waiter about it, and his response was what I doubted. Even the tips you pay goes to the owner. What a cheap guy!!!
We think that we are paying the tip to the staff but none goes to them as it happens in many small Indian/Thai/Chinese restaurants.
So last time I went there, after the meal, I asked for the guy who served me so that I can tip him cash. The owner looked at me angrily and called the guy who served us. I thanked him and tipped him cash. I had not even exited the place and I saw that owner asked for the tip money from the poor guy and took it away. I could not believe it.. I was so furious, I was about to explode but my wife just pulled me away knowing how I could have behaved that day as I just cannot tolerate injustice and suppression of ppl.
So, even if you go there next time, please do not tip the restaurant. If possible, cash tip the guy who served you. This rule can be applied to any small asian/maxican restaurant.
My understanding is that the city started proceedings to revoke their license to operate. In the meantime, they can continue to stay open because they addressed the violations, but because it has happened several times now, and some of the violations were serious, the city is trying to shut them down. I'm not sure where on the web we can go to track the progress of that action.
It looks like the Udupi has new management and new permit. The food tastes good as usual. Hope this new management runs very well.
