Update: Looks like GoMo's is no longer in business.

Moody, Adam and I headed over to a relatively new Korean restaurant in town for lunch this afternoon. Moody had eaten there before and said the food was pretty good. Moody has visited Korea several times, so I tend to trust his judgement on Korean food. Adam's been there once as well, but he wasn't as adventurous then as he is now.

Adam ordered the Yuk Gyae Jang, a beef brisket soup with green onions. Moody and I both had the Kimchi Tofu Soup with Beef. I asked for mine extra spicy. While we waited for our food, the waiter brought out a simple lettuce, cabbage and carrot salad with a sweet dressing for us to share. It was simple, but it tasted good. Besides, I was starving. Just as we finished the salad, the waiter came back with a tray of six or seven ban chan (Korean side dishes). There was kimchi, small anchovies, pickled radish, and a few others that I didn't recognize. They were all good, but the anchovies were my favorite. I was really hoping for bean paste of some sort, but there wasn't any to be had today. Go Mo's makes different side dishes every day, so you never know what they are going to bring you.

As we nibbled on our side dishes, a contingent of Koreans from my office came in. We're a Korean founded company, with a lot of Korean expats working in the office. When they give a restaurant their business, it's usually a good sign.

When our meals finally arrived, my soup was boiling (literally) in the bowl. It had a really good aroma and was nice and spicy - just the way I like it. My only real complaint here was that they use soft tofu in the soup. This made it really hard to tell the tofu from the egg they put into the soup. I'm not a fan of soft tofu in general, so I would have much rather had firm tofu.

The one thing that was absent from Go Mo's was the table top grills common in most Korean restaurants. I'm not sure why Go Mo's opted not to install them, but I think they add a sense of adventure and fun to restaurant dining that's missing from Go Mo's. The next time we come here for lunch, I'll probably try one of the bulgogi (BBQ) dishes.

Rob Brooks-Bilson's Gravatar Maria,

As far as I know it is. I haven't beent here in about a month, but I drove past the other day and they still appeared to be there. They don't have a website, and they just opened this year, so there might not be a listing for them.

David's Gravatar The Phoenix area is not well known for Korean food. I grew up in LA where there are as many Korean restaurants as there are Starbucks in most cities.

GOMO isn't bad as far as Korean food is concerned but the service is enough to deter me from ever going back. I believe the gentleman that seats you may be the owner and typically, it's a one man show aside from lunch time. I'm pretty open minded and allow for everyone to have a bad day but I've been here on 4 different occassions and Only had one good experience. And of course, that was when the owner did not help us.

The worst experience i've had yet, I asked for a dish that I've had there before (of course, when he wasn't in) and he looked me in the eyes and told me that they do not serve those on weekends. A few minutes later, I watched as a Korean group at another table received the very thing I was told that they do not have on weekends. I asked him again and he just shrugged and muttered something inaudible and walked away.

On another occassion, I watched as little groups of Koreans seated after us get served far before myself and my party and then we were not even served what we ordered. One member of our party was served about 15 mintues from the last one and then when they had to correct two of our orders, it was another 40 minute wait. There was no appology nor was there even the slightest bit of regret. His look was more of annoyance that we would even correct him or perhaps he thought we were lying. It was insulting the way he treated us.I was so highly disappointed, I know i'd rather drive further for Korean food, rather than go though that sort of rude service again.

Rob Brooks-Bilson's Gravatar Hi David,

I can certainly understand your frustrations. I've run into the same treatment at other restaurants. I've never had that problem at GoMo, though. I work for a Korean company (many of my Korean coworkers eat at GoMo) and the owner recognizes me when I come in, so that may have something to do with my "luck".

Have you tried Hodori or Korean BBQ in Mesa? I hear Takamatsu is also good, although I haven't been there yet. There are so many restaurant choices in the valley that one shouldn't have to put up with bad service. As you mentioned, I can understand one off day, but not four!

Rob Brooks-Bilson's Gravatar Hi Greg,

Thanks for the info. I haven't been to GoMo in several months. I've been getting most of my tofu soup at ChoDang these days.

Morgan Park's Gravatar I am so glad to know that GoMo is closed, my only question is: Why did it take so long? That place was AWFUL. Their panchan was garbage, and most of the time they had only one or two really good ones, and they substituted the other four with stuff I could tell they threw together that morning with stuff just lying in the kitchen. Their soondooboo tasted like water with red pepper and tofu, their yookgaejang is full of tough beef and the aroma is not quite right, and the kalbi is fatty. I can really think of nothing good about this restaurant, and quite frankly, I am shocked that KOREANS would eat that food!! I have been korean and had korean food all my life, and that place was awful. Thanks to a new owner, it is going to be reopenned in a few months as a sushi place. That's good, leave the korean food to Chodang!

Rob Brooks-Bilson's Gravatar Hi Morgan,

GoMo definitely went downhill since I first reviewed them in 2005. While most of their food was just so so, I think it's the service that ultimately did them in.

clifford's Gravatar Hey everyone - the owners of Go Mo's Korean Restaurant moved to the Manna Cafe on Arizona Avenue and Guadalupe. Also, the guy that served the food there was just an employee and he doesn't work there anymore.

:)

Enjoy!
